“All right, that wraps up everything I wanted to ask about the rigging.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, hoping my boss didn’t pick up on that over the phone. Bill’s questioning gets intense sometimes.

“It’s a good thing I got it all done before the first snowfall. Might have been a different story, otherwise.”

He makes a grunting sound of agreement. “We had some flurries here earlier. Probably headed your way soon.”

I look up at the sky on my way back to my truck, but nothing appears out of the ordinary. “I’ll keep an eye out.”

“You off site now?”

“Yeah, I’m done for the day.”

“Did that inn ever reopen in town? Or did you end up at a hotel in the next town over? Kirkwood, right?”

“No, I didn’t want to drive that far when I already have to hike out to the site. My room and board’s all worked out, don’t worry.”

There’s a pause over the line. “Don’t tell me you’re still at that house with the woman and her kids.”

I’d told him about that on my first day in Crescent Pass when I was tired and cranky. “Yeah, it’s actually working out well. No need to mess up a good thing.”

“Huh.”

Huh? What’s that supposed to mean?

“Care to elaborate on that?” I ask.

He chuckles lightly. “I remember asking you when you first started if you were married or had kids, and you said you weren’t cut out for family life. Now here you are living with one.”

Kevin said something similar the other day, too. But just because I’m living there temporarily… That doesn’t mean I’m part of their family. Doesn’t mean they would want me…

We like you here, too.

I shut my eyes briefly at the remembered sound of Kristen’s soft words the other night. Was she saying that to be polite? Or because she meant it?

“I… I guess I was wrong about that,” I tell him. Everything about this experience hasn’t been what I expected. “Anyway, is there anything else you wanted to discuss?”

One good thing about being on field work is our check-in meetings are only a once a week call, rather than nearly every day in the office.

“You know, I had another job come across my desk for Kirkwood. Never heard of this place and suddenly it’s all I see.”

My attention sharpens. “You going to bid on it?”

“Why would I? It’s too far.”

“I’d do it.”

If it meant staying here a little longer. A chance to spend more time with Kristen…

Fuck. Who am I kidding? She hasn’t even answered me about my lunatic suggestion, and it’s been days. She’s obviously not interested.

What had prompted me to propose something like that? Why would I think she’d agree?

“Sorry, I can’t swing another contract that covers your room and board,” Bill says. “Besides, I need you back here at the end of the month. You’ve still got analysis to do on all these samples you’re sending.”

I make a noncommittal sound of agreement, not fully invested in the conversation anymore as we review the next steps of the job, and I finish the walk to my truck.
